Product Data Sheet: CW-ESC E Span Clamp

Overview & Application

The CW-ESC E Span Clamp is a versatile metal fitting designed for aerial drop cable installations. It serves primarily as an attachment device to the messenger strand (cable support wire), providing a secure anchor point for the bail (hook) of a Drop Wire Clamp.

Beyond its primary function, the "E" hook design is also utilized as a pull-off, effectively holding the drop cable away from obstructions such as tree limbs or building overhangs. This capability often eliminates the need for additional tree guards or spacers, simplifying installation and reducing material costs.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Superior Strength: Engineered for durability, the tensile strength of the jaws and bolt exceeds 75,000 PSI, ensuring a robust and reliable connection in tension applications.

  • Secure Clamping: Designed with a specific clamping range from 1/4" (6.6mm) to 7/16" (11.1mm), providing a firm grip on standard messenger strands.

  • High-Quality Materials:

    • Bolt & Nut: Manufactured from Grade 2 Steel for optimal mechanical performance.

    • Jaws: Precision-rolled and stamped from 1018 Tempered Steel for enhanced hardness and wear resistance.

  • Corrosion Resistance: All components undergo rigorous galvanization processes to withstand harsh environmental conditions:

    • Bolt & Nut: Hot-dip galvanized to meet ASTM Specification A153.

    • Jaws: Mechanically galvanized to meet ASTM Specification B695.

Component Breakdown

The CW-ESC E Span Clamp assembly consists of three main parts:

  1. Pigtail Bolt: A threaded bolt with a pre-formed loop end.

  2. Two Formed Jaws: Specially shaped steel plates that wrap around the strand.

  3. Square Nut: Used to tighten the assembly securely.

Installation Instructions

Follow these steps for proper installation:

  1. Positioning: Place the two clamping plates (jaws) on top of the messenger strand. Insert the pigtail bolt through the designated holes in the jaws and thread on the square nut.

  2. Initial Tightening: Hand-tighten the nut to secure the clamp to the strand, ensuring it sits firmly in place.

  3. Attachment: Insert the drop wire, drop wire clamp, or wire grip into the open hook (bail) of the E Span Clamp.

  4. Final Placement: Pull the drop wire taut against the hook, directing it toward the service location (e.g., the subscriber's premises). Ensure the cable is routed clear of any obstacles.

(Note: Always refer to local safety regulations and installation guidelines before performing aerial work.)
